The View From The Shed

running a business during a pandemic

Kathryn Manktelow

Running a business in such hard circumstances can be a challenge.

Planning for print and packaging success is something we all know we need to do but finding the time is another matter. Right?!

2020 was a unique year that’s for sure. To all our customers, suppliers and partners, it has been a pleasure to work with you as we have navigated the challenges of not just covid but also Brexit.

I know from this time more than ever, that success is about planning, using the strength of your people and seizing opportunities whenever you can.

If you would like support with your planning or review of material suppliers then call Chapelton on 01622 882280 or request a call back and we will contact you.

Seizing Opportunities When They Arise

For some sectors, there has been a huge demand and that was the challenge. In others, I have observed considerable innovation by companies so that they can unearth new opportunities.

Who would have known a year ago that online shopping would spike this much, that billions would be made from face masks and hand sanitiser or even that dining domes (aka inflatable igloos) would be in high demand?

Some companies have transformed how they serve clients, taking, for example, huge face to face events and making them virtual.

These are not all ideas relevant to the print and packaging industry. I also respect some companies really have been forced to close their operations as demand has dried up. However, all we can do is ask ourselves “how can we make the most of this situation?”

11 Questions For Print and Packaging Success

People normally talk about January as the time to call a meeting as say “right everyone, let’s make a plan”. But you can do this anytime – and if you haven’t for a while then you must.

When we work with clients who have not done a review of their process and materials for a while then opportunities for improvement are nearly always spotted.

Pretty hard to know what is coming but the need to plan for print and packaging success is still obvious.

With the changes imposed on us, your team may be in a situation where they have the time to look more strategically. To review all your print and packaging needs, to consider new regulations and taxes, to give more thought to the circular economy and environmental impact.

Get as many people in your team as possible to consider these questions and pool the answers for discussion:

  1. How could we make more from what we do already?
  2. How could we become more efficient?
  3. How could we use our existing products in different ways?
  4. Are we getting all we need from our suppliers?
  5. How could we impact the environment less?
  6. How effectively are we communicating with our existing customers?
  7. What additional ways could we serve our existing customers?
  8. What new customers could we identify?
  9. How could we connect with those potential customers effectively?
  10. How – without concern for cost or demand – could we future proof our business?
  11. What new ideas and innovations can we come up with?

Future Demand

Speaking with some of our marketing and ad agency partners they are busy. This is normally a barometer of where the economy is headed. I cant say for certain at the moment that any barometer can be trusted but I do believe that beyond the challenges of covid-19 and Brexit we are going to see high demand everywhere as people and business surge towards some kind of normality.

Chapelton are here to help.

Let’s hope this will be good for all of us and make sure that we are all ready to capitalise. Share with Chapelton the ideas and questions from your team and we will gladly work with you on solutions to achieve print and packaging success.
