The latest food to go packaging innovations and trends you should know

Kathryn Manktelow

It is hard to ignore the pace of change in food to go packaging at present.

Food-to-packaging is a fast-evolving sector. Whether it is eco-friendly developments, the latest trends in convenience and portability or an innovative brand update, keeping up with the latest developments in food to go packaging can be hard work. To save you some time, I’ve pulled together the latest food to go packaging trends and developments that you should know

Lavazza’s recyclable coffee cup

With sustainability a high priority in every contemporary industry, Lavazza’s new biodegradable and recyclable cup is an important innovation.

Using paper sourced from sustainable forests, The KLIX Eco Cup is said to have an environmental impact that is 2/3 smaller than an average paper cup. The KLIX can be recycled in the same way as an A4 piece of paper due to its unique water-based dispersion barrier board.

Developed in collaboration with Kotkamills, Lavazza’s KLIX Eco Cup is set to be the first of a series of new releases for its food to go packaging this year. The KLIX will be in use in vending machines across the UK and is suitable for both hot and cold drinks.

OPRL – UK is leading the way in paper cup recycling

Paper cups are destined to receive their own unique on-pack recycling label (OPRL) in recognition of the many initiatives in action across the UK to promote the recycling of paper cups.

The new label will clearly show customers where the cups can be recycled to address the confusion that often existed around how to recycle unwanted paper cups.

The move has been warmly received by the Paper Cup Recovery and Recycling Group (PCRRG) who have long championed the recycling of paper cups in the UK. The PCRRG have worked in collaboration with the OPRL for some time to make sure that the appropriate measures are in place to support the array of initiatives that exist up and down the country.

With clearer labelling it is hoped that the wide range of programmes in place will continue to grow and flourish.

Smarties go 3D

Over the years many brands have been slow to recognise the opportunities that seasonal packaging presents. At Nestle, however they have taken steps to harness the increased consumer interest that arises for confectionary during seasonal periods.

Working in partnership with 3D brand innovators Osborne Pike, Nestle have launched a new series of striking and adventurous seasonal packaging.

Developed in consultation with their biggest market – mums and children, the winning collaboration have made use of developments in 3D printing technology to create a collection of packaging in the form of fun, colourful and tactile 3D figures known as Smarticons.

Looking as if they have been formed from Smarties, Nestle’s Smarticons can be shaken and played with for the ultimate seasonal must-have. Smarticons are available in 4 sizes and price points. Look out for Smarties Bunnies in stores this Easter following the well-received introduction of Smarties Penguins in December.

Starwhat? Opal Fruits are back

If you have never stopped calling them Opal Fruits, you will be pleased to know that Opal Fruits as a brand name has returned. As Mike Foster, creative director at Straight Forward Design, reminds us packaging is emotive, it transports us ‘back to yesteryear’. 1

With the desire for nostalgia visible everywhere, from our TV sets to our online shopping choices, it is no surprise to see a return to the past in the food to go packaging industry too. With only ads from television and print to inform their design, Straight Forward Design collaborated with respected typographer David Bateman and illustrator Simon Critchley to ensure that the new packaging was a worthy part of the brand’s history.

Opal Fruits are available in a carefully reworked, limited edition design that plays homage to the much-loved original design whilst adding some contemporary touches that it is hoped will garner both new and old fans.
