Vellamo

Vellamo water have announced that its labels will be made from a ground-breaking new 100% wood-based polyprene plastic.

Made from wood which is sourced from sustainable forests for a truly renewable product. Vellamo’s ground-breaking new label also reveals the product lifecycle and carbon footprint data in real-time.

Lidl

In response to the mounting dismay over the high proportion of plastic in our oceans, Lidl have produced food packaging made from plastic found on beaches in South East Asia.

Lidl says that it decided on South East Asia because ‘between 80 and 90 percent of plastic packaging that reaches the ocean enters from coastlines in developing regions such as South East Asia’. 

Made from 80% of recycled plastic, 30% of the plastic will come from waste plastics that are obtained before they enter the water, recycled and turned into resin. A process that is set to prevent at least 60 tonnes of plastic from entering the world’s waters.

To begin with, the new food packaging will appear on 13 fresh fish products and eventually used on all fresh fish products by the end of the year. An interesting start to what looks likely to become a new chapter in the global food packaging industry.

Mondi

Mondi have hit upon a phenomenal new food packaging solution to enable avocados to be transported safely and minimise food waste.

Designed in conjunction with Carta, the new sustainable packaging is 100% recyclable and does not need to be coated with paraffin for paraffin-free food packaging.

Created specifically for the problematic fresh food packaging industry, these corrugated cardboard boxes are designed to be robust yet more lightweight than their predecessor. A welcome combination of features because as Fruitnet.com suggests ‘approximately 14 per cent of the world’s food is lost between harvest and sale’.

Juan Javire, CEO at Catro says that they wanted the new packaging to be a quality reference point, something that would ‘withstand the challenges of long haul transport in humid environments’.

Mondi’s innovation solves the difficulties in producing strong food packaging for fresh fruit that will keep fruit and remain in good condition when travelling.
