With high targets for recyclable drinks packaging, the drinks industry has shown itself to be industrious and committed to reducing its plastic consumption. From labels to single-use bottles the innovations and improvements keep coming.
Better plastics and paper-based recyclable packaging look set to propel the drinks industry further towards its goals over the coming years. Let’s take a look at the latest developments within the drinks industry to increase the quantities of recyclable drinks packaging.
Evian
From April 2020 all bottles across the Evian range will be made from 100% recycled PET plastic.
In addition to reducing the plastic content of its bottles by 70%, Danone Waters UKI announced that the lowering of plastic in their bottles is accompanied by a pledge for their Evian and Volvic ranges to be plastic free by 2025.
The move follows switches by other brands such as Coca Cola, Belu, Buxton and Unilever to 100% recycled PET plastic over recent months.
In the words of Karen Lynch, Belu’s CEO, for many beverage brands ‘where the single-use can’t be removed’ manufacturers are creating the option for customers to ‘buy better. Using 100% recycled plastic is the lowest carbon footprint option that can be part of a circular economy”.
As part of Danone’s €2 billion rollout for its agriculture, packaging, energy, operations and digital divisions, Danone Waters UKI are also throwing their weight behind a Deposit Return Scheme and a collaboration with a number of partners for a circular economy initiative.
The considerable move towards “better” 100% recycled plastics across the industry can only be a good thing as companies look for more ways to meet customer demands for more recyclable drinks packaging as well as the aims of The UK Plastic Pact.

Starbucks
As the UK struggles to combat the coronavirus pandemic, Starbucks is preventing customers from using reusable cups both here in the UK and in the US.
Reverting back to traditional paper cups, customers can still carry their reusable cups into stores. Starbucks have also said that they will continue to award customers their 25p reduction for using a reusable cup. The same decision has also been made for Starbucks US stores.
Robert Lynch, Starbuck’s European spokesman announced that “ out of an abundance of caution, we are pausing the use of personal cups or tumblers in our stores across the UK”.
The move is part of a number of measures taken by Starbuck’s UK and US divisions to do their part to reduce the onslaught of Covid-19. With the global struggle to contain the coronavirus reaching epic proportions it is likely that the majority of Starbucks loyal following will forgive them for temporarily dropping their support for recyclable packaging for a short timeframe.
With widespread fears about the transportation of the coronavirus it is possible that we may see other brands make similar short-term decisions.

Grolsch
With the industry abandoning shrink wrap with ever-increasing speed, Grolsch has made a bold decision to swap the shrink wrap on its multipack cans in the Netherlands to packaging that is 100% recyclable.
For a completely eco-friendly solution Grolsch have chosen to use paper-based TopClip packaging that is said to be versatile, robust, ‘100% renewable, recyclable and biodegradable’.
In a move that is set to end the use of around 100,000 kg of plastic annually, Grolsch’s new aesthetic is a look that we may see more often if the paper-based packaging is rolled out across other brands within the Asahi Global Food and Beverage group that Grolsch belongs to, such as Schweppes and Mountain Dew.
