Vegan & Vegetarian Packaging Materials

With veganism and vegetarianism becoming ever more popular companies are looking for ways to accommodate what is required. Alongside food, clothing and beauty products there is a push for packaging to meet vegan and vegetarian standards.

The use of animal products is widespread and is used in more products that most of us know, from dyes to glue. The call for animal free products has increased and this has been extended to the packaging materials used.

With this, the interest in natural materials such as cartonboard and paper has risen. Being made from wood pulp with the addition of a small number of chemicals it is an obvious choice for those concerned with animal welfare.

The process of making these materials does not require the use of animal products and many of the producers do not actively use products that may contain traces of animals or that have been tested on animals.

It is of course possible that natural products such as those made from pulp have at some point come in to contact with animals, it is true however that they are not knowingly used to produce such items.

We know that plastics are a big problem at the moment in terms of the environmental impact they have and the worldwide push to reduce their use. It is not un-common for plastics or similar man made materials to potentially include substances derived from animals.
